![]() ![]() ![]() The cleric will have chain & shield, while the fighter will have plate. At level 6, we can reasonably expect both to have 18 AC. The second issue is that clerics are simply not as durable as Fighters. The rest of the party will likely have to actively work to ensure that the monsters can't escape the reach of the cleric. I think there are far too many ways for the ettercaps to avoid the cleric to say you can hit this target with any reliability, no matter how quickly you charge through the dungeon. This means to out-damage the Champion, the cleric must average more than 2.44 ettercaps caught in his spirit guardians every round. If he has a +1 sword, this rises to 26.03. ![]() Our Champion is blazing through the ettercaps with a stupendous 23 DPR. Spirit Guardians does 7.34 DPR to an ettercap, while Sacred Flame does 5.07. However, you may choose any enemy you like and input its statistics, as this is the code I am using:įirst, we'll focus on the world's most pointless statistic, DPR. I will ignore the potential effects of Web because at some point in these analyses, you have to make simplifications, and it's best to state what they are. You can't do any math without a target enemy, as your damage is determined by enemy saves and AC I'm going with ettercaps because at CR2, they're fairly threatening to level 6 parties in groups. After all, you can't cast Thunderwave or Guiding Bolt endlessly. I chose Sacred Flame because the cleric will naturally want to keep his distance from monsters, and because it avoids arguments about how many slots the cleric should reserve for other uses. I always choose Champion because the math is tractable Battle Masters will probably do more damage. I chose level 6 because that is the Fighter's last flat damage upgrade until level 11's third attack. Suppose we have a level 6 Greatsword Champion and a level 6 cleric using Spirit Guardians + Sacred Flame as his main offense. The math isn't tractable until you do so most analyses leave assumptions unstated. Those of you familiar with my whiteroom analyses know that I like to explicitly state as many assumptions as possible. ![]()
